Have you ever served on a jury or watched a TV show about a trial? If so, then you know the powerful role that eyewitnesses play. Their firsthand account establishes the facts and helps clarify the truthfulness of what really happened, especially when there are multiple witnesses that corroborate the same thing.
But a witness can’t testify about things they haven’t personally experienced. If they do, the opposing attorney will object on the grounds of “hearsay” or “speculation” or “facts not in evidence.” The judge will then instruct the jury to disregard the witness' statement.
Whether we realize it or not, as followers of Jesus, we are being called to the witness stand every day. People are watching us to see the reality of Jesus in our lives. They are looking to see if there is any life-transforming evidence of being in a personal relationship with Him.
The devil is like an opposing attorney who stands up and objects when we just repeat things we’ve heard others say but haven’t personally experienced. The culture is like a judge instructing people to just disregard our testimony on grounds of “hearsay” or “speculation” or “facts not in evidence.”
Fortunately for us, Jesus promised, “You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
The Holy Spirit empowers us to know Jesus authentically and tell the story boldly!
Think of the challenges you face today as an opportunity to experience the reality of Jesus personally. Are you in a stressful situation? Pray to experience His peace. Have you fallen short? Pray for His forgiveness. Are you feeling overwhelmed? Pray for His strength in your weakness.
Ask the Holy Spirit to help you to experience the reality of Jesus today so you have a story to tell tomorrow!
