Have you noticed that our world seems to have abandoned objective truth and replaced it with personal perspectives? We hear mantras like “Live your own truth” and “Be true to yourself.” But if truth is just a matter of personal perspective, how can we be certain about anything?
Fortunately, the Gospel of Luke offers us a completely different approach. Luke’s purpose in writing was clear, “I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” (Luke 1:3-4)
Uncertainty thrives on ignorance. Christianity isn’t meant to be blind belief but informed faith.
Luke wanted Theophilus (name means “lover of God”) and every other lover of God to have their faith grounded in historical facts and eyewitness accounts. So he did extensive research and interviewed those who knew Jesus and walked with Him.
As a result, he provides an abundance of details that the other Gospel writers don’t. He gives us insight into Jesus’ extended family, His birth and even a story from His childhood. Luke also went to great lengths to show us how all the things that happened to Jesus were a fulfillment of prophecies from the Old Testament.
Jesus’ life wasn’t just a historical reality, it was a prophetic certainty.
In a culture where “truth” is seen as fluid, Luke encourages us to be certain about the facts of Jesus. His Gospel offers a resounding confirmation that our salvation story is rooted in prophecy, grounded in history, and confirmed by eye-witness testimony.
As we read and study Luke’s Gospel, ask God to give you greater certainty of faith!
