What’s The Most Important Question?

What do you think is the most important question you’ve ever been asked? Maybe something like, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” or Will you forgive me?” or “Do you want to get married?” or “What’s the meaning of life?” or something different altogether?

In Mark 8:27-29, Jesus asks His disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” It’s actually the most important question of the entire Bible and the answer is essential to faith. How you answer determines where you spend your eternity. Everything hinges on that one question.

The disciples responded that people had various opinions of Him— “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.” These answers showed that some saw Jesus as a great preacher, others as a miracle worker, and still others as a prophetic figure.

In the same way, today, people hold differing views about Jesus. Some see Him as a religious figure, or a wise teacher, or a social reformer. Others see as a miracle worker or even a great prophet. But Jesus was not seeking confirmation from the crowds; He was looking for a personal confession from His closest companions.

So Jesus turns the question on the twelve and asks, “‘But what about you?’ he asked. ‘Who do you say I am?’ Peter answered, ‘You are the Messiah.’” For the disciples, Jesus was much more than a religious figure. He was the long-awaited, God-anointed, heaven-sent, Savior-King. By acknowledging His true identity they were declaring not just their faith in Him, but their allegiance to Him!

Here’s the important truth about faith in Jesus – You can’t accept Him as your Savior and not submit to Him as your Lord!

So, let me ask you the most important question… “Who do you say that Jesus is?” Is He just a distant religious figure, or is He the divine Son of God who came to save you personally? Is He just someone to praise on Sundays or is He worth pledging your whole life to every day?

What about you… who is Jesus to you, really?
