Are you feeling worn out and weary, beat down and burdened by the demands of life? If your answer is “Yes” then Jesus has a simple four-step solution that will change your life!
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
1. Come — The solution for a worn out, burdened filled life starts by coming to Jesus. We take our first steps towards Him by admitting that we are tired of self-effort, acknowledging that life is too heavy to handle on our own, and accepting that we need help plowing through life.
2. Take — Once we come to Jesus He invites us to “Take My yoke upon you…” A yoke is a wooden beam that joins two oxen together, enabling them to work side by side. Taking on Jesus’ yoke implies that there is still work to do as we plow through life’s challenges.
Now this might seem counterintuitive at first glance. If we are weary, why would we want to take on Jesus’ yoke? That’s because there is no such thing as a yoke-less life!
If we reject Jesus' easy and light yoke, then we will stay under the heavy yokes of the world… things like self-reliance, perfectionism, pleasing others, fear and worry, bitterness and unforgiveness, addictions, comparison and envy or guilt and shame. Jesus isn’t asking us to take on an additional yoke, He’s inviting us to exchange our heavy ones for His light one.
3. Learn — After we’ve come and linked ourselves to Jesus, He starts to teach us the best way to plow through life. We learn from Him that the “easy” way is through gentleness not forceful striving. We discover that the heaviest burden is a proud heart, but a humble approach lightens every circumstance.
4. Find — The result of coming, taking and learning is that we will “find rest for your souls.” Rest doesn’t come from doing nothing. Rest is discovered not by doing nothing, but by doing the right things with Jesus. It is found in ditching our self-effort and humbly acknowledging our need for Jesus’ help. Rest is found in relying on Jesus’ strength to pull us through the hard and challenging times.
Let’s come, take, and learn from Jesus so we can find His rest for our souls today!
