Dry Bones

I saw a great many bones on the floor of the valley, bones that were very dry. 3 He asked me, “Son of man, can these bones live?” I said, “Sovereign Lord, you alone know. – Ezekiel 37: 2-3

Have you ever felt spiritually dry and lifeless? As I sat down to write this devo, that’s exactly how I felt. It’s been a long, full and tiring week and I’m feeling a little drained. So as I read and reread different passages from Ezekiel no inspiration came.

But then I kept coming back to chapter 37 and this passage about the valley of dry bones. When the Lord asks Ezekiel, “Can these bones live?” he answers, “Sovereign Lord, You alone know.” I love Ezekiel’s honestly. He has doubts about the outcome, but he still trusts in God’s sovereignty.

Then God says to Ezekiel, “Prophesy to these bones, and say to them, ‘O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord!  Thus says the Lord God to these bones: “Surely I will cause breath to enter into you, and you shall live” (Ezekiel 37:4-5). That’s what we need… to hear God speak to us through His Word. We need the Lord to breathe a fresh breath of life into these dry bones. We need the Lord to give us new life by the power of His Spirit today.

If you’re feeling a little dry and lifeless, trust in God’s sovereignty. Ask Him to speak to you afresh through His Word to breathe some fresh life into your dry bones.
