Man on a Mission!

“He said to me, “Son of man, stand up on your feet and I will speak to you.” As he spoke, the Spirit came into me and raised me to my feet, and I heard him speaking to me.  He said: “Son of man, I am sending you… to a rebellious nation…” – Ezekiel 2:1-3

Yesterday, we got a glimpse into Ezekiel’s vision of Jesus in all His glory. Today, we get to listen in as Jesus speaks to Ezekiel. Just like we took a look at the different aspects of Ezekiel’s vision yesterday, I want to take a closer look at the specifics of their interaction.

The first thing Jesus says to Ezekiel is “Stand on your feet.” Now Ezekiel had understandably fallen on His face at the sight of Jesus. But it’s interesting that Jesus wants Ezekiel on his feet, not his face. Jesus doesn't want us falling flat on our faces or sitting on our hands. He wants us on our feet and ready for action. When Jesus speaks, we should be ready to take a step of faith.

The second thing we see happens is the Spirit came into Ezekiel. This is important because it shows that, even though Jesus wants us standing on our own two feet, He doesn’t want us to step out in our own strength. That’s why He sends us the Holy Spirit. If we are going to truly respond to Jesus' voice then we need the help of the Holy Spirit to do it.

After the Spirit enters him, Ezekiel declares, “I heard Him speaking to me.” It’s significant that the Holy Spirit is the one who helps Ezekiel accurately hear what Jesus wanted to tell him. In the same way we need Jesus to send us His Spirit so that we can discern the difference between the sound of our own desires, others expectations, cultural pressures and the voice of Jesus.

Once Ezekiel is ready to hear and respond, Jesus speaks – “I am sending you.” What Jesus really wants Ezekiel to hear, understand and respond to is that He has a mission. Jesus wants to send us out on a mission to reach a world that has rebelled against Him. In order to be like Jesus and be on His mission we must be in a posture of readiness, Spirit filled, listening to His voice and ready to go.

Jesus is on a mission. Will you join Him today?
