What are you drinking?

“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water.” – Jeremiah 2:13

Springs are a natural, consistent, reliable and clean source of life-giving water. You don’t have to dig them or maintain them. They flow continuously, even during periods of drought. The water is also purified by passing through layers of rock removing any impurities and contaminants.

Cisterns on the other hand have to be dug by hand and checked regularly for leaks. You have to wait on the weather for them to be replenished with rainwater. During droughts, they are the first thing to dry up. Since they are filled with rainwater runoff they get contaminated by whatever pollutants get washed in from the surrounding environment.

In John 4:13-14 Jesus told the woman at the well that He was the true source of living water and that, “...the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” Just like with the woman at the well, Jesus invites us to stop trying to find and hold onto life and satisfaction that comes from our own broken plans and self-effort. Instead, we can drink from the water of the Word that has been filtered through Jesus our Rock and bubbles up with life-giving insight by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Let’s turn our hearts to Jesus today and draw our life and satisfaction from Him!
