“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” – Isaiah 9:1-2
When Adam and Eve first disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, the world was plunged into the darkness of sin and people lived in darkness ever since. But Isaiah prophesied that the coming of Jesus would be like light dawning after a long and dark night. Jesus was the light of the world in a couple of specific ways: 1st by being living a perfectly righteous life, and 2nd by proclaiming the truth of God’s love and plan for salvation.
In his Gospel, John tells us, “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” (John 1:4-5) Jesus came to shine the light of righteousness and overcome the darkness of sin and death.
When Mary and Joseph came to dedicate Jesus as a baby at the temple, a godly old man named Simeon came and took Jesus in his arms and praised God, saying “...my eyes have seen Your salvation which You have prepared before the face of all peoples, a light to bring revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel.” Simeon seemed to be referencing this verse from Isaiah.
In Matthew 4:12-17, the Bible says that Jesus’ ministry of preaching in Galilee was a direct fulfillment of this prophecy from Isaiah 9. Jesus Himself said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Just like the sun rose this morning and brought light and warmth to the earth, let Jesus' presence bring hope and comfort to your heart. Because of Him your sins have been forgiven and you have been given His righteousness. Bask in the warmth of His love for you today!
