Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm; for love is as strong as death, its jealousy unyielding as the grave. It burns like blazing fire, like a mighty flame. Many waters cannot quench love; rivers cannot sweep it away. Song of Solomon 8:6-7
Today's verses speak of the enduring and unquenchable nature of Jesus’ love for us. Romans 5:8 tells us that “God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Jesus’ love is so strong He faced death and the grave in order to make a way for us to be in a relationship with Him. It’s the greatest demonstration of love imaginable. It is a love that burns like a raging flame and cannot be extinguished by any external force.
That’s why Paul was able to declare so confidently, “I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38–39).
When we begin to understand the intensity and immensity of Jesus’ love, we will cry out like the Bride in Song of Solomon, “Place me like a seal over your heart, like a seal on your arm…” Just like a wedding ring symbolizes the covenant of marriage, the seal in this verse represents the permanence and security of a covenant relationship with Jesus.
When we put our faith in Jesus’ love for us, God seals us with the Holy Spirit and pours out His unchanging, unconditional and everlasting in our hearts. Baptism is the sign of that covenant and communion is the regular reminder of it.
Are you confidently resting in the unconditional and unquenchable love of Jesus?
