“Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed. Forsake foolishness and live, and go in the way of understanding.” Proverbs 9:5-6
One of the most controversial things Jesus ever said was, “Very truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you have no life in you” (John 6:53). Most people didn’t understand and couldn’t accept a radical statement like this. As a result, many stopped following Him.
But on the night before He was crucified Jesus took bread and broke it and gave it to His disciples. Then He took a cup of wine, gave thanks for it and offered it to them. He explained that the bread was His body and the wine was His blood – His sacrificial death on the cross for them. To eat and drink means to fully receive His sacrifice for our sins by faith as the only source of forgiveness and eternal life with God.
So Jesus invites us to “Come eat… and drink” and to “forsake foolishness and live.” Everytime we share communion we are reaffirming our faith in His sacrifice for our sins and rejecting the foolishness of living contrary to His Word.
Do you have a regular habit of reaffirming your faith and rejecting foolishness? When are you planning to take communion with God’s people next?
