Oh What Joy!

Oh, what joy for those whose disobedience is forgiven, whose sin is put out of sight! Yes, what joy for those whose record the Lord has cleared of guilt, whose lives are lived in complete honesty! – Psalm 32:1-2

These verses from Psalm 32 capture the heart of Easter, so let’s take a minute and reflect on three things Jesus’ death on the cross accomplishes…

Disobedience forgiven. The fundamental idea of “disobedience” in this context is a refusal to obey someone in authority in a way that breaks the relationships. The word “forgiven” actually means to bear or to carry.

Sin put out of sight. The word “sin” in the Bible typically means to fall short of the mark or stray from the path. “Put out of sight” means that something has been covered and is no longer visible.

Guilt cleared. The core concept of “guilt” is the idea that disobedience and sin always come with damaging consequences. Sin and disobedience have the inevitable effect of destroying the individual. The word “cleared” means to not rightfully assign something.

So let’s put it all together… Because Jesus carried our disobedience our rebellion has been forgiven and the broken relationship with God restored. Because Jesus bore our sin all our shortcomings have been covered and when the Father looks at us He no longer sees any of it. So, as a result, the Father has removed the damaging consequences of our guilt so that it won’t destroy us any longer.

Let’s come to Easter Sunday with the truths of this psalm ringing in our hearts with a resounding “Oh What Joy!!!”
