“For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame.” Hebrews 12:2
As we get closer to celebrating Jesus’ resurrection, the psalms continue to give us incredible insight into everything that Jesus experienced and accomplished on the cross. In Psalm 22:6-8 it foretells an often overlooked part of Jesus’ time on the cross, “I am a worm, and no man; a reproach of men , and despised by the people. All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads.”
When we think about the crucifixion it’s easy to just focus on the physical suffering that Jesus endured on our behalf. But it is just as important to remember that He also endured the shame that was ours as a result of sin. Jesus was humiliated, ridiculed and scorned, not for anything that He had done, but because our sin was placed upon Him. The shame of our sin was so great that even the convicted criminals crucified with Him joined in the mocking.
In vs. 8 it goes on to essay, ‘He trusts in the Lord,’ they say, ‘let the Lord rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him.’ The irony is that the very thing they ridiculed Jesus for was the very thing He was accomplishing for us. By bearing our guilt and shame Jesus made it possible for the Father to rescue us, to deliver us and to now delight in us. It is only because Jesus bore our shame that we can come boldly to the Father without any shame.
Are you living needlessly with shame from past sin? Remember, because of Jesus, when we confess and repent of our sin and God removes both our guilt and shame.
