Being In God’s Word vs. God’s Word Being In You

Blessed is the one… whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.  That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither— whatever they do prospers. – Psalm 1:1-3

As serious followers of Jesus we often talk about the importance of being in God’s Word every day. By this we typically mean reading it on a regular basis. But Psalm 1 shows us that there is a big difference between just being in God’s word and God’s word actually being in you.

In order to get God’s word in us we have to move beyond just reading it, we have to start meditating on it. That’s the key to getting God’s word “in” you – Meditation.  The problem is most people are not familiar with it and often confuse it with Eastern Meditation, which seeks to empty the mind.  Biblical meditation is about pondering a sentence or verse and letting God fill your mind with His thoughts.

When we meditate on Scripture, we are like a tree sending down roots into life giving truth. It allows us to soak up nourishment for our souls and bear spiritual fruit whatever season of life we find ourselves in.

Pick up a verse from Psalm 1 and try spending a few minutes pondering it several minutes. See what God may speak to you.
