A Double Portion of the Spirit

“Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.  “You have asked a difficult thing,” Elijah said, “yet if you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours—otherwise, it will not.” 2 Kings 2:9

When Elijah was about to be supernaturally taken up into heaven, his disciple Elisha asked to receive a double portion of his spirit. He wanted to continue his master’s ministry with even more power and anointing. Elijah tells his young protégé, “If you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours.” In other words, “if you keep your focus on me you’ll receive it.” This is a great foreshadowing of Jesus’ promise to send the Holy Spirit to His disciples so they could continue His ministry with His power and anointing.

Jesus had already promised his disciples that, “Anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.” Then, right before Jesus was also supernaturally taken up into heaven He told His disciples, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8). Jesus’ intention for us as His disciples is to continue His ministry with His anointing. But, just like Elijah told Elisha, we need to be diligent to not lose sight of our Master. Because if we do, we’ll miss the whole purpose of the Spirit’s power – pointing people to Jesus.

What about you? Have you been diligent to keep your focus on Jesus? If not, spend a few minutes right now asking Him to help refocus you today.
