Preparing Hearts for Jesus

Jesus said… “From the days of John the Baptist until now, the kingdom of heaven has been forcefully advancing, and forceful men lay hold of it. For all the Prophets and the Law prophesied until John. And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.’” Matthew 11:12-14

Elijah is one of the most colorful and prominent figures in the Old Testament. He was a prophet to his generation and a prototype for John the Baptist who prepared people to meet Jesus. Elijah even makes a New Testament appearance with Moses to meet with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration. John the Baptist fulfilled Malachi’s prophecy that Elijah would return and make the way straight for the Messiah. He was called “Elijah” because he came in the “spirit and power of Elijah'' (Luke 1:17)

So what was this spirit and power that they both came in?
  • They were more concerned about being faithful than fashionable (both just wore plain camel hair garment and a leather belt).
  • They chose a life of poverty and obscurity as a witness against the indulgent culture
  • They were anointed with the power and called multitude to repentance.
  • They stood boldly against the religious hypocrisy of their day
  • They called out the sinful behavior of the political rulers

We are also called to prepare people to meet Jesus. Which of the characteristics of Elijah/John is God calling you to embrace today? I pray God anoint you
