Wiser than Solomon

1 Kings 10:1 & 8-9 – When the queen of Sheba heard about the fame of Solomon and his relationship to the Lord, she came to test Solomon with hard questions… She said to the king… “How happy your people must be! How happy your officials, who continually stand before you and hear your wisdom. Praise be to the Lord your God…”

The queen of Sheba made a long journey from a distant country to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Even though she was not one of God’s people, she had a deep desire to hear God’s Word and learn from His wisdom. She had an open and receptive heart to the things of God and when she heard God’s wisdom  through Solomon she was overwhelmed and praised God.

In Luke 11:31 it says, “The queen of Sheba will stand up against this generation on judgment day and condemn it, for she came from a distant land to hear the wisdom of Solomon. Now someone greater than Solomon is here—but you refuse to listen.” Jesus references this story to give a strong indictment as well as make a bold claim. The claim is that He is greater than Solomon, Israel’s richest and wisest king. The indictment is that, unlike the queen of Sheba, who traveled a long distance to hear Solomon’s wisdom, the people of Jesus’ day had God Himself standing right in front of them yet refused to listen to His wisdom.

Let the queen of Sheba serve as an inspiration for you and not an indictment against you. Spend some time seeking Jesus’ wisdom through His Word and prayer today.
