2 Samuel 5:2 – the Lord said to you (David), ‘You will shepherd my people Israel, and you will become their ruler.’
The first time we meet David in the book of Samuel he is out in the fields watching the sheep. When he goes to fight Goliath he has come from shepherding his father’s sheep. When God chose David to be king over Israel, He told him that He wanted him to be a shepherd for his people. David would have clearly understood that this meant that he was to protect, provide, care for and guide God’s people.
David’s role as shepherd-king is a profound picture of Jesus that shows us that He isn’t just our Savior, but also our Shepherd. He doesn’t just fight our battles but He also watches over us every moment of every day. We can rest assured knowing that He is there to protect us, provide for us and guide us to green pastures and still waters.
Why not take a minute and read Psalm 23 and thank Jesus for being your Good Shepherd today?
