A Man After God’s Own Heart

1 Samuel 13:14 – The Lord has sought for Himself a man after His own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be commander over His people…

Saul was Israel’s first king and, based on appearances, he was the perfect choice. He came from a powerful family, was extremely handsome and was a head taller than everyone else. But Saul had a heart problem that caused him to never fully obey God. David, Israel’s second king, was the most unlikely choice. He was the youngest of eight brothers from a poor shepherding family in the tiny town of Bethlehem. But David's heart was one of pure obedience to God. Acts 13:22 tells us, “He (God) raised up for them David as king, to whom also He gave testimony and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My own heart, who will do all My will’” David wasn’t perfect, but He was perfectly committed to do everything God asked of him.

David points us to Jesus as the ultimate “man after God’s own heart” because He was both perfect and perfectly willing to do everything the Father asked of Him. On the night before He was crucified Jesus prayed, “Not my will, but Yours be done.” It was God’s will for us to be saved and Jesus fulfilled His Father’s will by dying for us on the cross. He truly was a “man after God’s own heart” so that you and I could experience the love of God in our hearts.

What about you, are you a person of whole-hearted or half-hearted obedience?
