Where Are You Looking For Refuge?

May you be richly rewarded by the Lord, the God of Israel, under whose wings you have come to take refuge. – Ruth 2:12

As two widows without any income, Ruth and Naomi were in a tough spot, struggling to even find food to eat. So, as the law permitted the impoverished, Ruth went to the fields of the wealthy at harvest time and see if she could scrounge up some leftover grain. By God’s grace, she ends up in the field of a generous, godly man named Boaz (Swiftness). Boaz has mercy on her and gives a place to belong, protection from harassment, water to quench her thirst, bread to satisfy her hunger and enough grain to share with Naomi.

In the same way, when we find ourselves in tough situations, God wants us to come to Him for refuge. By His grace, we can come to Jesus who will have mercy on us and give us a place of belonging in His Kingdom, protection from the enemy, the Holy Spirit to quench our thirsty souls, His Word to satisfy our spiritual hunger, and enough spiritual nourishment to share with others. And He will do it all swiftly when we turn to Him. Jesus Himself assured us, “Will not God give justice to his elect, who cry to him day and night? Will he delay long over them?  I tell you, he will give justice to them speedily.” (Luke 18:7-8)

When faced with tough situations, where’s the first place you tend to look for refuge? Your own wisdom, effort and resources? The advice/help of others? Or to the Lord in prayer?
