Grumbling or Grateful?

The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “How long will this wicked community grumble against me? I have heard the complaints of these grumbling Israelites.” Numbers 14:26-27

Have you ever found yourself grumbling about something or someone? Grumbling is an inner dissatisfaction that manifests itself in an under-your-breath kind of complaining. It starts out as a low-grade resentment but quickly grows into open rebellion. It’s a heart attitude that no longer sees the good but instead focuses on the negative. A grumbling heart is the opposite of a grateful heart. This is what we see today in Numbers 14. God was about to fulfill His promise and bring them into a land flowing with milk & honey. But, instead of seeing it as an opportunity to trust God, they grumble against Him instead. They lost sight of God’s past faithfulness in the midst of present challenges. They stopped being grateful and started grumbling. Notice that God saw their complaining as grumbling against Him and an ultimate rejection of Him and His goodness.

If we replayed the last week of your life, what would we see? Has it been characterized more by grumbling and complaining or gratitude and thanksgiving?

Let’s purposefully cultivate an attitude of gratitude for all God’s goodness in our lives. Why not take a few minutes and write down 10 things that you are grateful for today?
