Seeing Jesus in the Burnt Offering

Chapter 1 of Leviticus describes the burnt offering. There are three key aspects of this sacrifice that point to Jesus. First, the offering was to be a male from the herd that was spotless and without defect. This points to Jesus’ sinless nature. Second, the burnt offering was the only offering which was completely burned—nothing could remain. Third, the purpose of the burnt offering was to atone for sin. This all points to the perfect, complete atoning work of Jesus on the cross. No amount of good works can ever atone for sin. Only the perfect and complete sacrifice of Jesus makes atonement. So whenever you are tempted to try and atone for your own sin, remember that Jesus has already made atonement for you by offering Himself fully to God.

“For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.” Hebrews 10:14
