“The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life.” Proverbs 10:11
I don’t know about you, but I love fountains. I love the soothing sound that they make. I love that they are always flowing fresh. But what makes the words of the righteous a fountain of life? If we keep reading in Proverbs we get some great insight.
Proverbs 13:14 tells us, “The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.” Our culture is full of snares and deceptions that lead to a ruined life and spiritual death. Words that flow with wise, biblical teaching help people understand the things in life that can truly ensnare them and kill them.
Proverbs 14:27 says, “The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.” We live in a fearful society. The problem is that we’re fearful of all the wrong things. We are afraid of getting sick, not having enough money, rising crime and violence, etc. We are so distracted by all these fear that we lose our reverence for God. Words that point us back to the greatness of God and restore our holy fear of Him are a fountain of life.
Simon Peter understood this when he told Jesus, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life” (John 6:68). Jesus is the ultimate fountain of life because He is perfectly righteous whose teaching points out the snares of death and points us to the greatness of God! We also get to be fountains of life as we share the words of Jesus with others.
What’s been flowing out of your mouth lately? Have you been a fountain of life to those around you?
