The Cornerstone

“The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; the Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.” – Psalm 118:22-23

These verses are some of the most quoted Old Testament verses in the New Testament. Jesus quoted it about Himself in Matthew 21:42, Mark 12:10-11 and Luke 20:17. Peter quotes it in when preaching about Jesus in Acts 4:10-11 and then quotes it again when writing his first letter 1 Peter 2:7-8. And finally Paul alludes to in Ephesians 2:20.

But what exactly is a cornerstone and why is it so important? Well, a cornerstone is the very first stone that gets laid and it becomes the reference point from which every other stone is aligned. As such, it unified the entire building into a cohesive structure. The cornerstone also served as the firm foundation upon which all subsequent rows of stone were built.

In the same way, Jesus is the origin, the reference point and the foundation for our faith and without Him there would be no unity in the church. In fact, division among believers is a sure sign that we’ve lost sight of Jesus. As a result, things can start to get crooked and out of balance in life.

How well is your life aligned with Jesus today? Do you have a clear focus on your reference point? Is there a sense of unity that you share with all other players?
