Our Forever Priest

Psalm 110:4 – The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

Melchizedek is a fascinating figure who appeared to Abraham in Genesis 14 after he returned from saving Lot and the people of Sodom. Melchizedek was called the king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He blessed Abraham and served him bread and wine. In reverence, Abraham gave him a tenth of all he had recovered.

We don’t hear of Melchizedek again until Psalm 110 where David foretold that the Messiah would be an eternal priest “in the order of Melchizedek.” But it isn't until we get to the book of Hebrews that we discover the real significance of this for our lives.

“First, the name Melchizedek means “king of righteousness”; then also, “king of Salem” means “king of peace.” Without father or mother, without genealogy, without beginning of days or end of life, resembling the Son of God, he remains a priest forever” Hebrews 7:2-3

Jesus is our forever priest who is also the King of righteousness and peace. Because His priesthood the Levitical priests His sacrifice for sin supersedes theirs and makes ultimate atonement for us. Because He is the King of righteousness He is then able to give us eternal righteousness and peace with God. Because He has no beginning or end He always mediates and intercedes with the Father on our behalf. How glorious it is to have Jesus as our forever priest after the order of Melchizedek.

Are you resting in the fact that Jesus is your forever priest? Are you responding in reverence to His blessing like Abraham did?
