I am the Lord your God, who brought you up out of Egypt. Open wide your mouth and I will fill it. But My people would not heed My voice, and Israel would have none of Me. – Psalm 81:10
If you’ve ever watched a parent trying to feed a baby they’ll often say, “Open up” as they try and coax their child to eat something healthy. But if the child doesn’t believe it’s going to taste good then their lips stay shut tight and their head turns away in defiance. This is the picture we get from Psalm 81, that of a loving Heavenly Father trying to feed us good things. But like a resistant child we keep our lips shut tight.
In His famous Sermon on the Mount, Jesus expands on this thought. He told us, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” (Matthew 5:6). We are truly blessed when our tastes mature from fleeting happiness to fulfilling righteousness, from passing pleasure to surpassing peace, from our own happiness to His holiness.
So what have you been hungry for lately? Ask Jesus to give you a wide open hunger this week for His righteousness so He can fill you to overflowing with Himself!
