Completely Drained

For the Lord holds a cup in his hand that is full of foaming wine mixed with spices. He pours out the wine in judgment, and all the wicked must drink it, draining it to the dregs. – Psalm 75:8

The night before He was crucified, Jesus went to one of His favorite garden prayer spots. He was clearly troubled and wanted to talk to His Father. He told His disciples, “My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here and watch with Me.” He went a little farther and fell on His face, and prayed, saying, “O My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.” – Matthew 26:38-29

In Luke’s Gospel he tells us that Jesus prayed so intensely that great drops of blood like sweat fell from His face. But what was this “cup” that he was so concerned about? Psalm 75 gives us the answer. It was the full cup of God’s judgment for all the sin that had or would ever be committed.

You see, Jesus didn’t just taste judgment for us, He drank it to the dregs. He consumed every last drop and drained it completely. That means that there is not one single drop of judgment left for us. When we confess our sins God is faithful we aren’t handed a cup of judgment but one overflowing with grace.

Take a minute and tell Jesus how grateful you are that He took every last drop of judgment for you.
