Yet I am always with you; you hold me by my right hand. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will take me into glory. – Psalm 73:23-24
In Psalm 73 Asaph recounts a time in his life when envy of unbelievers nearly stumbled him. It seemed to him like their lives were easy and his was hard. It made him question whether all his devotion and sacrifice were worth it. It was hard to reconcile how people could be so godless yet have such good lives. As a result, his heart started to grow hard and cynical.
But then, by God’s grace, during a worship service Asaph had a heart paradigm shift. Being in God’s presence made him realize that there was nothing more important or valuable in life than knowing God. In John 17:3 it says, “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you sent.” Paul the Apostle also declared, “everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus.”
Here’s the reality… knowing and loving Jesus matters more than anything else in life! Asaph didn’t know it at the time, but he was really writing about Jesus. Jesus is the one who is always with us. He is the Wonderful Counselor and the One who will receive us into glory. Because Jesus is our everything, try praying these next two verses of Psalm 73 to Him today…
Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever. – Psalm 73:25-26
