And now, my daughter, do not fear. I will do for you all that you ask… And now it is true that I am a redeemer… as the Lord lives, I will redeem you. Ruth 3:11-13
In Israel, when someone lost everything and became hopelessly indebted, God’s Word provided the opportunity for a close relative (kinsman) to buy them back (redeem) from their indebtednes. Boaz became this kinsman-redeemer for Ruth. He paid her debt, freed her from poverty, restored the family inheritance, and brought her into his family as his bride.
This is a beautiful foreshadowing of what Jesus would ultimately do for us in becoming our Kinsman-Redeemer. First, the Bible tells us that Jesus humbled Himself and became like us. Then He paid our debt for sin with His own life. In doing so, He set us free from spiritual poverty and brought us into abundant and eternal life with Him. Now, in Him we have an inheritance that is secure in heaven for us. But Jesus didn’t stop there, He also took us as His bride so that we could abide in a loving relationship with Him for eternity.
Why don’t you take a minute and express your love and appreciation to Jesus for being your Kinsman-Redeemer?
