Delivered in time of need

When the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them. – Judges 3:9

The book of Judges is a beautiful story of God’s grace, mercy and long-suffering. It’s more of a story about deliverance than it is one of judgment. In some ways a more accurate title could have been “Deliverers” instead of “Judges.” The whole book follows a predictable pattern of persistent sin, divine consequences, season of difficulty, heartfelt repentance and finally divine deliverance.

It also serves as a great reminder of how God uses difficulty to get our attention and soften our hearts towards Him. That’s because they remind us of our need for His mercy and grace. He’s not looking to judge us, but to deliver us from our own pride and selfishness. The whole book points to Jesus as our ultimate deliverer. If you’re going through a rough season it’s a great opportunity to reflect and see if there might be something God is trying to deliver you from. Either way, we can always cry out to Jesus our deliverer!

Hebrews 4:16 — Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
