But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites… However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants… Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites… Nor did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants… Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants… Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants – Joshua 1:27-35
At the end of the book of Joshua and the beginning of Judges we see the same story repeated over and over again of God’s people struggling to fully take possession of the Promised Land. They got off to a great start at the beginning but then stopped short of complete victory. They chose to settle for a little rather than fight for it all. As a result, they made compromises with the enemy, accepted defeat before even battling and in some cases just weren’t not determined to take what God had given. All of these little concessions would result in all the challenges that Israel would face in the future. The same can often be true with us. Jesus brings us into the promise of abundant life, but we stop short of possessing all that He promised. We make compromises and allow worldly things to take up residence in our hearts. We settle for forgiveness but never fight for holiness. Don’t be passive about possessing all of God’s promises today.
Take a minute and ask God to reveal to you any area of your life where you may be passively allowing a worldly attitude or behavior to remain?
