“So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors, and they took possession of it and settled there. The Lord gave them rest on every side, just as he had sworn to their ancestors. Not one of their enemies withstood them; the Lord gave all their enemies into their hands. Not one of all the Lord’s good promises to Israel failed; every one was fulfilled.” – Joshua 21:43-45
Ever feel like your life is constantly on the move or that you’re just moving from one battle to the next? This is what the Israelites experienced for over 40 years. So can you imagine how it must have felt when Joshua finally sent everyone home to finally settle down in the good land God had given them? Can you imagine the relief to not have to move anymore? Can you imagine the peace of not having to fight with your enemies? Can you imagine the joy of building a home and harvesting crops? Imagine their gratitude for the rest God had given them on every side.
But as great as this rest was, God has something even better for us in Jesus. Hebrews 4:8-9 tells us, “Now if Joshua had succeeded in giving them this rest, God would not have spoken about another day of rest still to come. So there is a special rest still waiting for the people of God.” The circumstantial rest that Joshua led them into was pointing to the eternal, spiritual rest that Jesus gives. In Matthew 11:28 Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Are you weary and tired in your soul? Come to Jesus today and asking Him to give you rest for your soul.
