How to love God with all your strength!

Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. – Deuteronomy 6:4-5

The word strength here in Hebrew is “meʾōd” and is usually translated “very” or “much.” The idea here is that to love God with all our strength means to love Him with our “much-ness.” In Lewis Carroll’s novel, Through the Looking-Glass, when Alice returns to Wonderland as an adult she is confronted by the Mad Hatter who tells her, “You're not the same as you were before. You were much more... muchier... you've lost your muchness.” Have you ever felt like that in your relationship with Jesus?  Like you just don’t have much desire for prayer, much appetite for the Word, much passion in worship, or much gratitude flowing out of our hearts. The hard truth is that sometimes we lose the muchness of our love for Jesus.

What about you? Are you not the same as you were before? Was there a time when you were much more “muchier” with Jesus? Have you stopped loving Him with your “muchness”?
