Feeling Condemned?

In chapter 3:1-5, Zechariah has a vision of Joshua the high priest standing before Jesus (the Angel of the Lord) dressed in filthy clothing while Satan stands right next to him accusing him before God. As the scene unfolds we see a beautiful depiction of God’s amazing grace in our lives as we struggle to live in holiness and righteousness.

Like Joshua, we also find ourselves standing before a holy God, clothed in the filthy garments of our sins. And, Satan is right there accusing and condemning us for our failures, weaknesses, and shortcomings—and he’s right! But instead of agreeing with Satan, Jesus rebukes him for accusing Joshua. Then He commands that Joshua's filthy garments be removed and that he be clothed in rich garments, and a clean turban be put on his head.

Zechariah’s vision is a powerful illustration of the sanctification process that takes place in our lives when we surrender our hearts fully to Jesus. Here is the liberating truth, Jesus’ death on the cross has way more power than all of our failures or any of Satan’s accusations!

It’s because of Jesus’ perfect, loving sacrifice for us that God can forgive us and cleanse us from all our unrighteousness. When we humbly put our trust in Him, our filthy garments are removed, and we are clothed with the righteousness of Christ. The clean turban represents the renewal of our minds as our thinking is transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1).

Let’s embrace this beautiful sanctification process today! If you are feeling filthy and condemned, confess your sin to God and let him cleanse you afresh. By faith put on Jesus and ask the Holy Spirit to help you walk in the righteousness that is yours in Christ.

Let’s be shining examples of God’s love and grace in a world that needs it so desperately!
