Through the preaching of Haggai, God confronted His people about their priorities, confirmed that He wasn’t blessing their selfish lifestyles, and then challenged them to consider their ways and start working on His house. In response to this challenge, something remarkable happened—God’s people got fired up!
“So the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua son of Jozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the whole remnant of the people. They came and began to work on the house of the Lord Almighty.” (Haggai 1:14)
This stirring up was not a result of their own efforts or motivations, but a direct work from God Himself. He ignited a divine spark of zeal in their spirits that set them ablaze for His work. They didn’t start working on God’s house out of a sense of guilt or obligation, but out of a genuine eagerness to bring Him glory. God gave them both the desire and the determination to pursue His purposes.
In a similar way, in our lives today, we need the Lord's stir us up. It's easy to become complacent and distracted by the busyness of life, the worries of the world, and pursuit of personal desires. However, just as in Haggai's time, God is calling us to consider our ways and realign our priorities with His.
He desires to stir up our spirits, to awaken us from our spiritual apathy, and ignite a passion within us for His work. When we allow ourselves to be stirred up by God, we become glorious instruments for His divine purposes.
Take a moment to reflect: On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being completely apathetic, 10 being radically on fire) how would you rank your current level of zeal for the work of God? Do you need a fresh stirring in your spirit today?
Start praying this short prayer every morning, “God stir my heart, I want to be fired up for You today!”
