Overflowing or Running on Empty?

Have you ever been close to running out of gas while driving somewhere? If so, then you know that anxious feeling in the pit of your stomach as you keep looking at the fuel gauge, praying for God to supernaturally multiply the gas in the tank so you can get to a place where you can fill up again.

Sometimes we live our Christian lives like that… rushing from one thing to the next not sure if we have enough love in the tank to not run out of joy in the trials, or peace in the busyness, or patience with our kids, or kindness towards those we find challenging. The good news is that Jesus never intended for us to be constantly running on empty.

In Joel, 2:28-29 God promised, “I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days” In Acts 2:17-18 Peter actually quoted this verse on Pentecost to show that this promise was now fulfilled.

Jesus said, “It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you” (John 16:7). Paul explained this advantage in Romans 5:5, “He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with his love.”

We never have to live our lives on empty again because Jesus promises to send us the Holy Spirit who will continually pour out God’s love in our hearts. It’s like having a supernatural gas station with you at all times filling our tanks full of love. As a result we can always overflow with joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control.

If you feel like your tank is empty today, stop right now, open your heart to the Holy Spirit and ask Him to fill you to overflowing with His love.
